21ft boat approaching Antigua
Micro-cruiser Richard Mayon-White and his 21 ft (6.5m) yacht Haskapa are due to arrive in Antigua after 29 days at sea alone since setting off from Gibraltar.
He has traced the meridian of the Tropic of Cancer in his bid to raise £40,000 to be split equally between two great causes, the Sobell House Hospice in Oxford and the national charity Sail 4 Cancer. A donation from the eventual sale of his yacht will also be made to a local Antigua charity.
‘As I approach civilisation, I’m already seeing more signs of life with aircraft and ships, and the fantastic sight of the frigate bird. Soon this little Haskapa shaped bubble that I’ve been living in pretty much since leaving the UK nearly two months ago will nudge up against normal, everyday reality. This project, driven by the desire to do something positive, has been a year in the planning, and encompasses a concept dreamt up mid ocean eight years ago, and a lifelong ambition. Those are big rocks to carry, and it will be with some relief that I’m able to put that burden aside.’
Richard is due to cross his self-imposed finish line at Falmouth Harbour as the local Antigua residents are getting out of bed. He will be docking at the Catamaran Club and welcomes all visitors.
