Two British sailors who learned to sail only three years ago are to compete in a round-the-world race accompanied by TV cameras. Former city worker Victoria Sanders-Perrin and her sailing partner, entrepreneur Jeremy Salvesen, plan to compete in the ‘Portimao Global Ocean Race’, which starts in October this year and circumnavigates the globe, stopping in South Africa, New Zealand, Brazil and the United States.

Race organisers Josh Hall and Brian Hancock, themselves veteran offshore sailors, say “The principal intention with this new event is to make around-the-world yacht racing as accessible to as many people as possible.”

The pair had originally planned to compete in Chay Blyth’s Global Challenge, and completed its rigourous training programme, but the company went into liquidation.

A number of documentaries will chart the pair’s progress round the world, and onboard cameras will show the viewing public how the duo cope with life aboard. Executive Producer Paul Cleary hopes the show will help make the sport more accessible: “The programs will bring the audience right into the high seas action to share the experience with the crews as they traverse some of the roughest and most hostile waters on the planet.”
