The first lighthouse in the world to be powered by hydrogen has been unveiled. South Gare lighthouse, built in 1884, at the mouth of the River Tees uses a fuel cell to power an LED light.

It works like a normal battery but can output full power as long as the fuel supply – produced from electrolysis – is maintained.

The only by-product is…..water.
