As somebody who once went jogging with Madonna in London’s Hyde Park in a bid to secure an interview – I got one, but only with her bodyguard – I’m not going to slate the lady, after all I got a new track suit and trainers out of it. And I think it is too easy, as some have done, to accuse the beer swilling pop queen and others of hypocrisy: she joins the Black Eyed Peas and Bon Jovi in an energy burning fest of rock music to mark Live Earth Day on July 7, to highlight the perils of global warming.

If that’s what it takes to get people to turn their flaming computers off – even here at YM we are told to leave our ‘work stations’ in a state of ‘sleep’ in case upgrades are performed out of office hours – or switch off lights in empty rooms, or boycott ‘French’ beans from Kenya, or go for designer goods such as Claud Butler rather than Golf GTI, then I’m all for it.

As for me on July 7 I will go for a sail. We are lucky as our hobby, and this industry are powered by the greatest forces of renewability: wind and wave.
