Four RNLI lifeboatmen will receive awards for two daring rescues last year
Four RNLI lifeboatmen will receive the institution’s Bronze Medal for Gallantry tomorrow. The presentation recognises the bravery and determination of the crews in two dramatic rescues carried out in the latter half of last year.
Helmsman Michael Farline (40), of the Filey lifeboat station, saved the lives of two stranded swimmers in treacherous conditions at Reighton Sands in August. Despite the heavy breaking seas which swamped the lifeboat and once drove her aground, Farline succeeded in returning both women to shore, immediately going back out to sea to investigate a report that other people might be missing.
In the Isles of Scilly, Coxswain Andy Howells (41) and crew members Philip Roberts (37) and Mark Bromham (25), of St. Mary’s lifeboat station, braved a force 9 storm to rescue a single-handed yachtsman who had lost control of his boat 32 miles south-west of the Bishop Rock light in October. The yachtsman had severe neck and head injuries, and had taken no precautions against the severe conditions. When the lifeboat reached the yacht, she was found to have her sails furled and covered, and no keys to the engine. Helped by a lee provided by MV ‘Okeanis’, Roberts and Bromham climbed aboard the yacht to rescue the yachtsman, who was later transferred to Treliske Hospital in Truro.
The medals are to be presented tomorrow at the RNLI Annual Presentation of Awards by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese.
