The longest non-stop race for fully crewed monohulls is set to start in Fremantle, Australia in December 2004. The fleet of identical Ron Holland designed 82 foot monohulls will circumnavigate Antarctica leaving the three great capes, Leeuwin, Horn and Good Hope, to port. The course covers around 14,600 nautical miles and is expected to take around 45 days. There will be 11 “electronic gates” that will keep the boats from sailing too far South and also divide the race into 11 legs with US$ 100,000 prizemoney for each. There is also US$ 2,500,000 for the overall winner. Boats will be true ‘national’ teams with all crew members hailing from the same country. Theoretically it will be possible for a competitor to more than recover the US$ 4,625,000 entry fee. The boats, which are included in the entry fee, are being designed to have a usable life after the race.
