The fisherman on whom Ernest Hemingway based his book The Old Man and the Sea has died at the age of 104.

Gregorio Fuentes, who skippered Hemingway’s boat Pilar had become a tourist attraction in the Cuban village of Cojimar in the years after the book was published.

He was awarded the International Game Fish Association’s Captain award last year, Reuters report.
