Jet-skis, have to date, not been regarded as ships and therefore have been exempt from being curbed by shipping regulations.

Now Shipping Minister Keith Hill is looking at proposals to improve maritime safety and changes in the power of harbour authorities to help them implement the Port Marine Safety Code.

It means that craft such as jet-skis and chain ferries could soon have merchant shipping legislation applied to them.
