Yachting Monthly visits Boot 16 in Düsseldorf, Europe’s largest boat show, to see the new Bavaria Cruiser 51 Style
Bavaria Cruiser 51 Style
This jolly giant sports the new ‘Style’ tag, the key feature of which is a redesigned galley. It’s U-shaped, to port, features a large fiddled workspace outboard and aft, and a wall of stainless steel forward that contains a huge fridge and freezer, and the choice of a wine cooler or a dishwasher, with the microwave outboard.
It’s all pretty spectacular but, with no bracing, you’ll need a galley strap on port tack if you’re not to end up sprawled all over the folding, fiddled saloon table to starboard. The chart table is aft of the galley, and raised above the galley’s sink by a few inches but I’d rather see a splashback there to protect my charts.
This layout has two aft cabins, neither en suite, and two heads just forward of them: the day heads to port and a shower with loo to starboard. The owner’s cabin is very obviously forward. It’s enormous, accommodating an island double berth, en suite shower and loo to port. To starboard – and this must be a first on a boat of this size – there’s a walk-in wardrobe.
The cockpit features twin wheels to make easier the walk through to the drop down transom. Main winches are within reach of the wheels, not so the primaries, though I’d expect many of these to feature electric winches all-round.
The fixed, twin-leaf table provides bracing for the crew. Up forward there’s a large bow roller with a short bobstay to handle offwind sails. Stowage is in a sail locker at the bow, two sole-depth cockpit lockers and in a lazarette.
Who would she suit?
She would be excellent value as a Mediterranean base for an active family or for gregarious retirees.
