Boost to visiting yachts

A new pontoon at Eyemouth, Scotland has been opened for visiting yachts. It has a depth of 0.9m at low water, but yachts taking the the ground will have soft mud under the keel.

The pontoon was opened by The Rt. Hon Michael Moore MP along with Eyemouth Herring Queen, Miss Devon McNab.

The total value of the funding was £153,983 which was 75% Coastal Communities Funded (£115,487) and the additional 25% came from European Fisheries Fund (Axis 4) and Scottish Borders Council (£19,247.75 each).

The new facilities located on the west side of the inner harbour, below the old fish market will accommodate 100m of additional quayside berthing for a range of leisure vessels and provide passenger access to the shore via a gangway. Funding contributed towards the installation of the floating pontoons, non-slip decking and serviced bollards connected to fresh water and an electricity supply.

The overall objective of the project is to increase visitor numbers and develop tourism in the area and the Trust hope the new pontoon will attract additional visitors to the area; support local businesses through provision of infrastructure allowing development of tourism and aiding growth in a number of sectors; safeguarding existing jobs and create new employment opportunities and promote sustainable economic growth in the East Berwickshire community.

Michael Moore MP said:”Christine Bell and the rest of the team at the Eyemouth Harbour Trust deserve great credit for securing the funding for this new leisure craft pontoon at Eyemouth Harbour.

“The pontoon will really help to develop the leisure facilities in the harbour and to showcase the beautiful Berwickshire coastline to more tourists.

“I am delighted to be opening the leisure craft pontoon on Friday and I look forward to continuing to engage with the Eyemouth Harbour Trust to ensure the local Eyemouth community can benefit from the enormous economic potential of the harbour’s development”.
