Port of Poole to open in April
Work is underway on a new £1million marina in Poole Harbour that is expected to open in April 2011.
The marina, part of a wider £25million project to revamp the harbour, will be able to host 59 10-15m yachts, as well as eight superyachts.
John Binder, of Poole Quay Boat Haven, who leads the project, said: ‘This was born out of an idea to create new facilities in time for the 2012 (Olympic) Games, but even without that event demand for good quality berths in Poole is high.
‘We’re working to transform what was once the Ro-Ro ferry berth into an attractive marina with floating breakwater and pontoons.
‘Demolition is already underway to clear the way for toilets, showers and parking. We hope the Port of Poole Marina will attract sailors from all over the world, bringing a big boost to our local economy.
‘You couldn’t find a prettier, better positioned site – it has stunning views of Brownsea Island and is only two hundred yards from the bustling Poole Quay, with its numerous pubs and restaurants.
‘We’ve already built a strong reputation at Poole Quay Boat Haven for personal service and will be applying the same standards of welcome to guests who join us at the Port of Poole.’
The new marina will also have space for 15 ribs and 20 jet skis and a free rib taxi service to Poole Quay.
