Ecume de Mer
This French-built, early Group Finot design was a very popular, almost
archetypal quarter-tonner from the early 1970s. Most of the 1,400 launched
were built in France, but they were also produced in Japan, Holland and
Australia. The French boats were solidly built in GRP and most hulls still have
plenty of strength in them. She has five berths in an unusual layout with
the chart table against the forward bulkhead. The saloon is roomy, but the
forecabin is cramped. She has outstanding upwind performance and is easily
handled despite a large headsail. Cruising and racing versions were built.
The latter was much more popular, had a 5ft rather than 4ft draught, and an
adjustable backstay. For a history of the Ecume de Mer, see her designer’s
website: www.finot.com.
