Well-balanced and quick, the 35 Classic is one of the
lightest cruisers in her class, displacing just 4.5 tons.
But she’s sturdy, too – Dufour did not skimp on build
quality. A combination of moderate freeboard,
pleasing sheerline, low coachroof and reverse
transom make her easy on the eye. The deck
layout works well, although the non-slip
surfaces could be grippier. She is blessed with a
strong masthead rig, set well forward to avoid
the usual masthead drawback of a small
mainsail and an overly large foretriangle.
She sails well upwind, tacking through
80º during YM’s test sail. Below decks,
the 35 Classic is comfortable but solid
rather than plush. She’s not quite
as roomy as many of her rivals,
but arguably better suited to
offshore sailing. The fl ip side of
the coin is limited headroom,
a constricted aft cabin and
poor engine access.
