Nursery rhyme sanitised
Report: ‘A nursery rhyme has fallen victim to the PC brigade after booze references were taken out of What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor?
‘The Government-funded charity Bookstart changed the lyrics to the traditional sea shanty – penned in 1891 – from “drunken sailor” to “grumpy pirate”.’
But is this not just as much of a problem? Why should we assume pirates are grumpy? Those Somalis collecting craft from yachts to super-tankers off the coast of Somalia are not exactly unhappy. Is there not a danger here of misrepresentation?
