Plucky yachtswoman spotted during Cowes Week
Handicapped yachtswoman Megan Pascoe has been chosen to join Gipsy Moth IV on one of the 29 legs of her two-year round the world voyage. Although paralysed down one side of her body she started sailing at the age of eight and has been part of the British Paralympic development squad since 2002.
The United Kingdom Sailing Academy, based at Cowes is in charge of the selection process. Megan came to the judging panel’s attention last week while competing in Cowes Week with two friends who are also disabled.
Three of the six places available on each leg will be filled by young people who have either suffered major illnesses or have encountered difficult personal circumstances. The remaining places will be filled by a UKSA professional skipper, a mate and support crew.
