American teenage sailor Abby Sunderland, 16, sister of Zac Sunderland, is en route for the Equator aboard Wild Eyes, her Open 40, in a bid to become the youngest, non-stop, solo circumnavigator. She passed Cabo San Lucas on the Californian coast on Saturday.

Her 17-year-old brother, Zac Sunderland’s own solo,stopping circumnavigation record was beaten by the UK’s Mike Perham last summer who was a few months younger.

Ahead of Abby is Australian schoolgirl Jessica Watson, also 16, who is en route back to Sydney upon reaching which she will have completed her own solo circumnavigation.
