Six crewmen were desperately fighting a blaze aboard the coaster Sea Riss 14 miles off Ramsgate, Kent, as firemen were lowered down from a helicopter.

A passing container ship stood by while the operation was carried out in the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

CO2 was released into the engine room as the crewmen were later mustered on deck.
