Legend of the Cowes waterfront
The legendary yacht and ship rigger Harry Spencer has died aged 84. From America’s Cup Jubilee yachts to Tall Ships Harry’s specialist rigging company was always in demand.
He rigged schooners like Adix, Altair, Creole and Mariette to Tall Ships like HMS Bounty – for the 1962 film, Mutiny on the Bounty, starring Marlon Brando – , Tenacious and Lord Nelson. He also rigged out the world’s largest gaff cutter, Lulworth and the J-Class yacht Endeavour.
But Harry was equally at home researching and rigging out small classic yachts like the Burgoine- built 35ft Cygnet.
He leaves a wife, Ross, two sons Mark and Ralph and four grandchildren.
