Spot checks occuring at the country's marinas
Yachtsmen in Italy could find themselves a target for Italian tax authorites as part of a nationwide crackdown on tax evaders.
According to The Daily Telegraph, teams will be carrying out spot checks on yachts, especially in the most popular tourist resorts, such as the Amalfi coast (pictured above), to ensure people are paying what they owe.
Yacht owners will be asked to hand over registration documents which will then be cross referenced with the income they have declared for that year. If there is a discrepancy between the numbers the agency will investigate further.
According to the latest figures available from the Agenzia delle Entrate, the country’s equivalent of the Inland Revenue, Italy loses more than €124 billion every year through tax evasion.
This is thought mainly to affect superyacht owners, but smaller yacht owners should still be aware that they could be questioned.
