The Today programme broadcast live on distress frequency
Bemused Coastguards tuned into Channel 16 to discover the BBC Radio 4’s Today programme being broadcast!
The Great Yarmouth Coastguards found their distress channel completely blocked by a ship which had inadvertantly jammed their VHF handset to the on position. The officers listened in as the crew enjoyed the Today programme occasionally commenting on world events.
The BBC were asked to put out a warning on the programme to all ships asking them to check their radios. Meanwhile the Wells lifeboat was launched and , following a line of radio signals from the rogue ship, came across the coaster Victress 10 miles offshore and alerted the crew.
