Mike Perham meets Zac Sunderland in Cape Town
Solo sailor Mike Perham, hoping to be the youngest person to sail round the world, arrived in Cape Town yesterday.
Yachting Monthly reader Alan Hughes, who sails out of the Royal Cape Yacht Club in Cape Town, assisted in line-handling when Mike came alongside yesterday afternoon on his first stop since the Canary Islands. Mike has suffered rudder problems, which he is hoping to sort out.
The yacht club sent out a welcome boat with the Marina Manager Dave Dickenson at the helm with Mike’s father, a BBC cameraman and Tommy Walker, the Mr Fix-It of the RCYC who is to attend to any repairs required to Mike’s yacht.
‘After we made fast, Mike and his father and friends went to the RCYC
veranda for a drink, interviews and to meet Zac Sunderland, who is also
in Cape Town doing repairs on his yacht Intrepid, before setting off to
the Caribbean,’ said Alan, whose photo shows Mike and Zac (in baseball cap) enjoying a drink.
According to reports Mike will leave Cape Town to continue his round-the-world record bid, bound for Hobart, Tasmania, sometime around Friday.
