Harbourmaster vetos sailing 'menace'
A solo sailor who has been rescued by the lifeboat ‘countless’ times has been banned from sailing by his local harbourmaster. Glenn Crawley, a 52-year-old retired electrician, has been banned from sailing Mischief, his 16ft Dart catamaran, by Newquay Harbourmaster, Derek Aunger, after the RNLI say they have ‘lost count’ of the number of times he has been rescued.
Crawley, a member of Newquay Sailing Club, has been rescued five times in the last two years by inshore lifeboats at a cost of £2,000 a time. One of the problems is that the cat is meant to be sailed by two people, like the one pictured, and when Crawley capsizes it he hasn’t always got the manpower to right it.
Now Crawley, who works in a surf shop, has been ordered to go back to school and take some sailing courses.
