£1,000 prize taken
Traditional sailor Mike Garlick, crew member of historic vessel Maybird, has had his image selected from over 300 entries to become winner of the National Historic Ships Photography Competition 2011.
The judging panel included Jock Wishart, one of the UK’s leading maritime and polar adventurers, renowned actor Timothy West, author Philip Hoare and Yachting Journalists Association Pantaenius Yachtsman of the Year, Geoff Holt.
Mike, who regularly sails in the Solent, will receive his prize at a special Awards Ceremony held on board HMS Belfast on 19 October 2011, hosted by Antiques Roadshow expert, Dr Paul Atterbury.
2010 judge and competition supporter, actor David Suchet, said: “I am delighted to have been involved with National Historic Ships’ Photography Competition and was particularly impressed with the imagination and unusual perspectives in the photographs from the children’s categories. I have a keen interest in photography.”
The £1,000 prize secured by the winning entry will be spent directly on an historic vessel of the winner’s choice from the 1,000 vessels on the National Register of Historic Vessels. The competition was organised by National Historic Ships – the official voice for historic vessels in the UK- in partnership with Classic Boat magazine.
