Offshore racing in cruising boats: will it make a comeback?
Fastnet veteran and offshore racing lass, Jan Wise, has produced a new book on the history of East Coast racing and it is peppered with cruising insights.
In the book: 50 Years of East Anglian Offshore Racing, Jan records the fact that racing has taken a ‘big swing’ towards round-the-cans and Olympic style racing and away from the ‘cruising-friendly role.’
She wonders if this is simply a reaction to the omnipresent and therefore tedious growth of technology. More importantly she heralds a ‘steadily growing groundswell’ of support for the traditional style of racing.
50 Years of East Anglian Offshore Racing is published by Brent Publications and costs, £9.95. ISBN 0 948706 11 2.
