Unique wooden boat on show over Bank Holiday weekend before Afloat exhibition at Torre Abbey
The remarkable boat Collective Spirit is on a tour of ‘the English Riviera’ and will be on show over the Bank Holiday weekend at Beacon Quay, Torquay.
The boat, which was made as part of the Cultural Olympiad using random pieces of wood donated by members of the public, will then be part of a major exhibition of marine art, held at Torre Abbey, Brixham. The exhibiton includes watercolourists, oil painters and other artists from across the region and runs from 8-18 September.
Here is a time-table of the Torbay tour:
20th to 23rd August, 10am – 4pm, Paignton Green, as part of Children’s Week. Join
the boat for boatside gatherings and ‘gutter racing’.
24th to 26th August, 10am – 4pm, Beacon Quay, Torquay. Join in with the Regatta
Celebrations over the Bank Holiday weekend.
8th September to 8th October inc. 10am – 5pm, Spanish Barn, Torre Abbey. Open Weds-Sun.
At each location, visitors are encouraged to help the crew as they make up songs about Torbay, as part of the Collective Spirit tour, which the boat will take with it as it continues around the coast.
Collective Spirit was created by The Lone Twin Boat Project.
Have a read of Dick Durham’s blog about the initial appeal for bits of wood from Lone Twin, back in 2010.
