Peter Bainbridge was today awarded the Yachting Monthly Family Trophy for Sky Hunter’s ISC Class C-winning performance in the Round the Island Race.
The race proved to be a relatively slow one with the winds easing and remaining in the southwest rather than strenghtening and veering westerly as some forecasts had suggested. Of the 1,641 yachts registered to start, only 110 had finished by 1730. That number increased to 800 at 2030 and 1,392 by the deadline of 2200. The last boat to cross the line was Mark Keville’s Wind’s Song, which got home with 11 minutes to spare.
Rosina of Beaulieu, a Contessa 26 owned by Jeremy Rogers MBE, beat the IRC Class One Farr 52 Bear of Britain by just 17 seconds on handicap to take overall first and the Gold Roman Bowl. Rogers’ time of 9h 15m 48s contrasted sharply with the 5h 22m 53s of the student-crewed Farr which took the Vaphio Cup for winning her class.
The Island Sailing Club has confirmed that next year’s event will be held on 21 June 2003.
