Legacy of sledge-hammer attack
A jagged and dented piece of silverware once part of the 1848 crafted America’s Cup, which was stolen after the trophy underwent a sledge-hammer attack from a Maori activist while it was on display at the New Zealand Yacht Squadron, has been recovered.
It is the second stolen section of the original cup to be recovered and both are now in the possession of the current holder of the America’s Cup – the Societe Nautique de Geneve(SNG).
The London jeweller Garrard, who were repairing the cup after the attack in 1997 revealed the pieces had been unlawfully removed from their premises.
