Sad end of a 81-year-old lone mourner
A lone sailor took his wife’s ashes on a 10,000 mile voyage across the Pacific from San Diego to Japan for burial….as he had promised her.
Then on his return the 81-year-old yachtsman’s passage ended 800 miles out from Japan where his 39ft yacht Miya – his wife’s maiden name – was drifting.
The body of her skipper, former tuna fisherman Sakae Hatashita was found slumped in the cockpit by fishermen three weeks after delivering Shizuko’s ashes.
